Many of us wear an insulated jacket at camp or during our trips. It keeps you warm while sitting around camp and you can also use the jacket’s insulation to augment your sleep system.
I have been using a PHD Hispar Half Bag (review here) in concert with a wafer vest or Yukon jacket (conditions depending) for some time now. I have enjoyed the flexibility of being able to stay warm at camp rather than sitting around cold in a hardshell, while opting for a half bag has ensured I’m not carrying a larger/heavier sleeping bag than I need.
For many this has involved trial and error in establishing just what mix of jacket + sleep system is appropriate for particular conditions. PHD have aimed to demystify this with their “Sleep Systems” guide – which outlines the best combinations of their clothing and sleeping bags for lightweight, versatile insulation in all conditions from warm valley camps, to the highest peaks.
PHD’s gear certainly isn’t cheap, but if you’re looking to go fast and light without going cold – their sleep systems section has been very well thought out and is definitely worth a look.
